We started to see the closed questions, the ones where you can only answer yes or no questions.

If you are going to ask a stranger in the street a question, the language should be different from what you use with your boss – which is also different from what you use with your family and friends. Let’s break it down into three contexts:

  • Family context (informel): for use with members of your social circle and family members.
  • “Everydaycontext (= courant) : for use with strangers, people you meet in the street and have a quick chat with;
  • Formal context (= formel): to use with older people, superiors or those to whom you owe a higher level of politeness;
